Hot Air Ballooning, why we do it!
This mornings flight was the perfect example of why I became a hot air balloon pilot and why I love flying here in the Hunter Valley. Two passengers booked themselves onto a special VIP ride with Wine country ballooning. Meeting at the Mercure resort about 30 minutes before sunrise and then we set off in the 4wd to our launch site.
The Hunter Valley gardens proved too be the perfect place to launch, first drifting to the east before climbing to a height of 1Km above the valley floor as we drift back towards the world famous Tyrells Vineyard in Pokolbin. After a little while looking down on the broken back ranges we started to descend back to earth drifting right over the gardens and down the valley towards the Mount View region.
“Flights like this feel like you are just out enjoying yourself with a few mates” as our pilot recalls. ”The valley looks perfect today and the conditions for hot air ballooning this time of the year are perfect, clear skies, light winds and plenty of action on the ground as the vineyards are busy harvesting this years vintage”
Now sometimes the tricky part of flying is finding somewhere to land where you can easily get the truck to and get your balloon back. Locked gates, creeks and angry bulls all provide challenges. Today was a dream.
No problems with the truck getting to the balloon and the only car we held up was our good friend Jay, pilot from Hunter valley helicopters on his way to work.
